When I hear Nevada, I think of the city of Las Vegas. I think of the 4.2 mile long strip that is filled with casinos, flashy lights, shopping, and show stopping performances, but there is more to Nevada than this strip. Here is a list of eight off strip experiences you’ll want to check out!
#1 Fremont Street Experience
A popular attraction in Las Vegas is the Fremont Street Experience where a LED canopy plays light shows while zipliners shoot across from a slot machine from above. Similar to the strip, this street offers casinos, restaurants, and hotels. Depending on the time of the year, there may be outdoor concerts, but there is always free music and street performers.
#2 Downtown Container Park
Not far from the Fremont Street Experience is the Downtown Container Park. This park offers shopping, entertainment, and food.
#3 18b Arts District
Filled with antique shops, boutiques, art galleries, and graffiti art by local artists, the 18b Arts District is sure to delight. The art of downtown Las Vegas is not to be missed.
#4 Neon Museum
Much of the history of Las Vegas can be drawn from the neon signs that used to adorn the casinos and hotels. The Neon Museum in downtown Las Vegas is dedicated to the preservation of retired neon signs. A visit to the Neon Boneyard via walking tour will give you a glimpse of the history of Las Vegas. Self-guided tours are available as well.
#5 Red Rock Canyon National Conversation Area
Rent a car, or join a tour and take a 22 minute drive to Red Rock Canyon. Enjoy the 13 mile scenic loop drive with a few scenic stops to enjoy the different parts of the canyon. The trails and hikes available will allow you to enjoy the canyon more in depth.
#6 Hoover Dam & Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge
The 726′ concrete-arch gravity dam sitting in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River is located 45 minutes away from the strip and provides power to the states of California, Nevada, and Arizona. It was a marvel during its time in construction and still a marvel today. Just in the distance is the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge that was built to free up traffic congestion and provide easier access across the Colorado River.
#7 Seven Magic Mountains
A 23 minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip will bring you to Ugo Rondinone’s $3.5 million public art installation amid the desert. It is unique to see the meaning behind this art piece (i.e. human existence in the desert) come to life as people gather around to enjoy the neon colored towers. The art installation permit has been extended to the end of 2021, so there is still time to visit if you haven’t already.
#8 Bootleg Canyon
If you’re more of a thrillist, or adrenaline junkie, then hop on over to Bootleg Canyon about a 27 minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip. Here you’ll be able to bask in the warmth of the desert while overlooking the beautiful blue waters of Lake Mead. Bootleg Canyon offers hiking trails, mountain biking, and ziplining.
